Forty metres of shoreline and the whole lake in front of it

The Frankton Arm, with Kelvin Heights opposite and the Remarkables behind it. Second floor and above clears the willows.

The terrace the house is named for

The 1884 survey map marks the slope behind us as white heath. In a July frost it still earns the name.

01

A casino hotel on the lake, and a house before it is anything else

White Heath stands on 88 Frankton Road, on the terrace above the Frankton Arm, four hundred metres from the Queenstown lakefront. There were eighteen rooms here in 1968, in a single-storey motor lodge built for people driving over the Crown Range before the road was sealed. There are 61 now, across four floors, and we have been running the place as a hotel since 2009 — 17 years, and about 84,600 guests.

The name is not ours. The 1884 survey map of the district marks the tussock slope behind the building as white heath, which is what the surveyor called country that goes silver under frost and stays that way until the sun comes over Queenstown Hill. It still does. Guests who booked a lake view have been known to come down in July and photograph the other side of the building instead.

This is a casino hotel and we do not bury that. The Ben Lomond Room is a real gaming room with 28 machines and 5 tables, open midday to 1am, licensed by the Department of Internal Affairs, and restricted to people aged 20 and over. It is also one room among many. Most guests here are here for the lake, the mountains, and a bed with a view of both, and the gaming room is a door they walk past on the way to The Kawarau Room.

There is someone on the front desk at three in the morning, and they will tell you honestly when the weather means you should do something else tomorrow.

Getting around Queenstown

We are on the quiet side of the arm: two and a half kilometres east of the town centre, far enough that you do not hear it and close enough that the bus outside takes you in. The concierge desk books the boats, the ski shuttles and the Skippers Canyon transfer, and will say plainly when the Crown Range is not worth attempting.

Host Responsibility

The Ben Lomond Room is licensed under the Gambling Act 2003 and run to a host responsibility policy the Department of Internal Affairs holds a copy of. In practice that means a few concrete things: there are no ATMs on the gaming floor, the nearest is at reception forty metres away; there are clocks on all four walls, visible from every machine and every table; the room has windows onto the terrace and daylight reaches it; and when it closes at 1am, it closes.

We do not lend money, cash cheques or extend credit against a room account. All 11 of our gaming staff hold current DIA host responsibility certificates. Self-exclusion is available in writing, confidentially, at the duty manager’s office, and we do not ask why.

A person reads these between 7am and 8pm, seven days. Outside those hours the front desk is on +64 3 450 2740 and someone is always there.
